In-Story Biography
Regarded as the unofficial “head gardener” of the family, Nancy has been tending to both Glenaerie’s flower beds as well as her own since she was a teenager. To her, the upcoming summer is no different from other years: each day spent working for the Island Heights 4-H extension service, while also finding the time to buy groceries for the family and help maintain Glenaerie as needed. She can be found playing music or hosting “craft parties” for her friends and siblings in her downtime.
Beyond the usual small-talk that characterizes most of her interactions with Glenaerie’s guests, Nancy likes to engage in deep and meaningful conversation with those she cares about. As such, she often finds herself playing the role of a confidante to her friends and family—building them up in their strengths, encouraging them in their weaknesses, and speaking hard truths when no one else will. It is this gift that will open a door the day she stumbles upon Danny in Glenaerie’s garden—and lead Nancy into a relationship she didn’t see coming.
Development
I’m pretty sure Nancy was inspired by Sarah from Liberty’s Kids when I was little. While I have no drawings of her prior to middle school, I do have a vague plot from 8th grade where Nancy (then called “Annie”) is mentioned as the daughter of a colonial family who lived in Philadelphia. The first official drawing of Annie, however, didn’t appear until my sophomore year of high school, when I felt my drawing skills had improved enough to capture her how I saw her in my head. Since then, she has undergone many revisions in terms of appearance.
While Annie’s (and later Nancy’s) relationship to Daniel features quite prominently in her character development, the past seven to eight years have seen her blossom into a fully-fledged individual in her own right. No doubt the literature I was reading in college about the relationship between women and domestic labor in the 18th and 19th centuries had something to do with it. My time at Dey Mansion, Washington’s Headquarters in 2021-2022 further developed Nancy’s role as her mother’s “right-hand man” in operating a large colonial household. This relationship has since followed her through her story-world’s time jump to the 1970s in mid-2023, in the form of a mother-daughter team managing the Glenaerie Inn (and later, a helping hand around the Glenaerie Airbnb in spring 2025). Nancy’s music tastes are directly taken from my own—and, like Danny, she has really come alive through study of the bands I’ve listened to since I was little.
A Fun Fact about Nancy
Nancy’s current occupation at a 4-H extension (as well as her surname) were inspired by Margaret Hartnett, a little-known “Home Demonstration Agent” from the early 20th century. My research into Hartnett’s life was originally part of an article from March 2024, which focused on the history of Home Demonstration Services (the predecessor to 4-H Extensions) and their widespread impact in improving domestic conditions for rural American women.
